Inside the Workshop: Fabricating an Immersive Tasting Room Experience

With the 4th of July tomorrow, thoughts naturally turn to tradition, celebration, and deep-rooted history. For our studio, there is a distinct magic that happens when heritage brand identity intersects with custom industrial fabrication—especially when honoring America’s native spirit. Two weeks ago, our team officially kicked off production on a massive experiential display project for a prominent, world-class bourbon brand. The goal? To transform a high-volume hospitality space into an authentic, multi-sensory tasting environment that feels both historic and impeccably modern.

Projects of this scale don’t just happen on the shop floor. They require rigorous spatial choreography, structural engineering cross-checks, and tight integration with multidisciplinary teams. Today, as we prepare for the holiday weekend, we’re pulling back the curtain to show you exactly how we take a project from a loose napkin sketch to fully resolved, heritage-grade architectural fixtures.

1. Cross-Disciplinary Synergy: Coordinating Lighting & Spatial Design

Building a memorable space requires an absolute alignment of layout, material texture, and light. From day one, our fabrication team has been working hand-in-hand with leading interior architects and professional lighting designers. When working with warm, rustic textures like exposed brick and weathered white oak—materials deeply woven into the fabric of American architectural history—lighting is the element that breathes life into them.

Our collaboration focused heavily on how light bounces off different surface treatments. Whether calculating how low-voltage LED accent lighting highlights a grain pattern or creating a warm, celebratory glow, every detail is intentional. The layout is designed to foster conversation and community, wrapping visitors in an intimate environment anchored by grand architectural focal points.

2. Digital Precision: From Hand-Drawn Concepts to SketchUp Models

There is a rich legacy of American craftsmanship built on hand-tools and hard work, but honoring that legacy today requires modern, digital precision. Every great build starts with an idea, often captured in a fast, loose concept sketch. But to ensure that a mobile bar cart functions seamlessly in a bustling commercial space, we have to transition rapidly into high-precision CAD modeling. Using SketchUp, we translated the initial design requirements into exact, dimensioned shop drawings.

Take our custom mobile bar units, for example. The initial brief called for a standard 60-inch-wide footprint. However, after modeling the inner spatial clearance required for back-bar open shelving and calculating real-world workflow paths, we optimized the final dimensions to 64″ × 42″ × 26″.

Through digital prototyping, we engineered integrated recesses for a heavy-duty wheel assembly—incorporating two fixed swivels and two high-capacity locking casters. This ensures the heavy timber structure remains flawlessly stable during service but can be effortlessly repositioned by staff to reconfigure the room for private events.

3. The Structural Puzzle: Prototyping the Barrel Stack Wall

One of the most visually arresting elements of this upcoming space is a monumental, multi-tier barrel display wall. Stacking full-sized bourbon barrels safely in a public, high-traffic hospitality environment presents a significant engineering challenge. You can’t just pile up history and hope for the best; the kinetic load and structural balance must be carefully managed with true industrial ingenuity.

We are currently prototyping a bespoke cradle system keeping each barrel locked securely in place. By testing the stack geometry in our shop, we are verifying weight distribution, mitigating wood deflection, and ensuring that the entire installation seamlessly interfaces with the venue’s rustic brick back wall.

4. Advanced Fabrication: CNC Toolpathing & Detailed Texturing

The final layer of any premium build is the branding and detailed ornamentation—the elements that tell the brand’s historic story. To achieve a deeply tactile feel that pays homage to traditional wood carving, we are utilizing advanced CNC routing and high-fidelity laser engraving rather than simple surface printing.

  • Laser-Engraved Micro Detail: For the intricate, heritage emblems featured on the bar’s central raised panels, we have calibrated our large-format laser engravers to micro-etch directly into the dark-stained wood fibers. This technique burns away material at varying depths, creating a stunning 3D relief that catches ambient light beautifully.

With the digital designs finalized, structural barrel tests passed, and material samples approved, our fabrication floor is operating at full speed right up until the holiday fireworks. We are officially entering the home stretch!
