Crafting a Legacy: The AMPED “Building a More Equitable Community” Installation
At Open Grain Woodworking, we believe that wood is more than just a building material—it’s a medium for storytelling. Recently, we had the honor of partnering with AMPED Louisville to bring a powerful vision to life.
AMPED is an organization dedicated to youth development and community empowerment through music and technology. Their mission is rooted in creating opportunities where they didn’t exist before. When they approached us with a design for a permanent installation titled “Building a More Equitable Community,” we knew this was more than a woodworking project. It was a chance to help build a physical symbol of progress.
The Vision: An Organic Mosaic of Voices
The design for this installation is as unique as the community it represents. Rather than a standard, rigid sign, AMPED chose an organic layout featuring a mosaic of wooden blocks.
The heart of the project lies in the details: each individual block was signed by a member of the AMPED family—students, mentors, and community leaders. These signature blocks surround the central message, literalizing the idea that a more equitable community is built one person at a time.
The Technical Challenge: Precision in Every Angle
A project like this requires a blend of artistic intuition and rigorous engineering. The central text was designed to stand out with high-contrast precision. To achieve a crisp, professional look that would last for years, we utilized:
-
Color: PMS White 0C / Matthews Paint: MP High Reflective White
-
Finish: Satin Gloss for a sophisticated, modern sheen
-
Dimensions: Letters at 5″ height with a 2″ thickness to create a 3D effect that “pops” against the wood texture.
One of the unique challenges of this installation was the environment itself. The hallway wall where the piece was destined to live featured a slight bend. In woodworking, a “simple” curve can often lead to widening gaps and broken lines.
To solve this, our team engineered a custom backer system that accounts for the wall’s radius. By meticulously tapering the backer and adjusting the 1/4″ reveal, we ensured that the organic “flow” of the blocks remained seamless, hiding the wall’s imperfections and making the art feel like an integrated part of the architecture.
Why It Matters
For Open Grain, these projects are why we do what we do. We don’t just want to fill a space; we want to enhance it. This installation serves as a daily reminder to everyone who walks through the halls of AMPED that they are part of a larger structure of equity and support.
Whether it’s a branded message for a corporate office or a community-driven art piece, we pride ourselves on solving the “impossible” technical hurdles while keeping the heart of the design front and center.
